You know that feeling when you're already on the road, making last minute texts to make something happen. Well, let's just say I had to wing it once more. It's my life's routine, though.

Former commercial fisherman and Long Island-native Ethan (Vision L.A.) was also a good sport when it came to executing douchebag glares, rocking a tartan skirt and waving around plastic marijuana leis.

A collision of the old and new worlds are in the works. Michael Schmidt's metal chains dangle at the rooftop bar and dipping pool Upstairs. Commune Design's Joshua Tree inspired decor and yin yang carpets roam the 13-story building. The Church of the Open Door's "Jesus Saves" neon sign stays put. Meanwhile, the Haas Brothers mark their territory with sketches from Snoop Dogg to Rain Man all over the cafe walls. The biggest show of all, apart from the minimalist rooms, is the reconstructed gothic United Artists Theater originally built in 1927.

Ace Hotel Downtown Los Angeles opens its 180 rooms to guests on Wednesday, Jan. 15.

REVISITING THE PHILIPPINES

I am long overdue, and on Filipino time for once. Here's photos from my first time visit to Boracay, Ilocos Norte and Ilocos del Sur and revisits to Manila, Cavite, etc. last May. 

The paradoxical nature of the islands has produced diversity, resilience and 
creativity… pang laban sa pinsala ng hayop, na natural Haiyan.
